Over time, this pooling gradually worsens circulation in the legs and, if left untreated, may lead to inflammation, bleeding, non-healing leg ulcers, superficial or deep vein thrombosis, and even embolism.
What kind of varicose veins do you see on your legs?
Treatment of small varicose veins (e.g. spider veins)
Treatment of larger varicose veins
There are fundamentally two main approaches to the treatment of varicose veins:
- Conservative treatment
- Surgical intervention
Conservative treatment
Conservative treatment is intended to relieve symptoms and help prevent complications; however, it does not eliminate varicose veins on its own.
Main methods include:
- Wearing compression stockings – daily use may help slow the progression of the condition
- Medication – so-called venotonic drugs may help reduce symptoms
- Local treatment
- Lifestyle recommendations – such as regular exercise and weight management
Important!
- Conservative treatment requires continuous attention and often becomes a lifelong commitment. However, lasting and definitive treatment of varicose vein disease can only be achieved through surgical procedures.
- If you notice that your varicose veins are worsening or progressing despite conservative treatment, this may indicate that the current treatment is insufficient.

What happens during varicose vein surgical care? What are the steps?
The first consultation:
During the consultation, we discuss your complaints, symptoms, the onset of the detected problems, and other relevant details. In every case, a detailed ultrasound examination is performed, as modern varicose vein diagnostics cannot be carried out without it. We examine the major visible and non-visible veins and assess the deep veins at multiple points to check for any recent or previous deep vein thrombosis. Additional examinations may also be performed if necessary to determine the underlying cause of the problem.
Important!
- For the examination of the veins, shoes, trousers, and compression stockings (if worn) must be removed, and the patient will need to stand in front of the treating physician during the examination.
- The examinations are generally performed in a standing position, and the legs are examined with ultrasound from the groin area down to the ankles.
- If you have an active wound on your leg, the dressing will be removed during the examination and replaced with a new one. If you use a special type of dressing, please bring it with you.
The procedure:
If, during the examination, a decision is made to perform surgery or another intervention, all related details and necessary steps will be discussed thoroughly with the examining physician, whether it involves a minor injection treatment or a laser vein closure procedure.
During the consultation, we provide all documentation related to the procedure and answer all questions that may arise.
Treatment of small veins, such as spider veins, is performed on an outpatient basis at Parliament Medical Center.
Surgical treatment of larger varicose veins (such as glue closure procedures or laser varicose vein surgery) is performed in the operating theater of our partner institution.
