Diabetology Private Clinic in Budapest
Diabetology is the branch of medicine that deals with diabetes, including its prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
What is diabetes?
Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder. Insulin, produced by the pancreas, is the only hormone capable of lowering blood sugar levels. If the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas are damaged, or if the body becomes resistant to insulin (insulin resistance, relative insulin deficiency), blood sugar levels rise above the normal range, leading to diabetes.
It is important to emphasize that the problem is not only the increased amount of sugar in the blood — which causes symptoms only in severe cases — but also the serious complications associated with untreated diabetes, which can even become life-threatening. Therefore, if elevated blood sugar levels are detected or diabetes is diagnosed, it is essential to consult a specialist and follow the prescribed treatment, even if no symptoms are currently present.
In Hungary, diabetes is considered a widespread public health condition. In many cases, diagnosis only occurs after complications have already developed, such as vision impairment, poor wound healing, chronic limb pain, circulatory disorders, or even amputations. Early diabetes screening is especially important for individuals with a family history of diabetes.
Diabetology examination
To diagnose and manage disorders of carbohydrate metabolism, the specialist evaluates the patient’s overall health condition, including medical history, family history, and potential risk factors. In cases of suspected diabetes, as well as for the management and regular follow-up of diagnosed type 1 and type 2 diabetes, consultation with a diabetologist specialist is essential.

Diabetes screening and diagnosis
If fasting blood glucose testing (routine blood test) does not clearly confirm diabetes (blood glucose level below 7 mmol/l), but diabetes is still suspected, an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) may be necessary. This test can confirm diabetes or prediabetes (IFG, IGT), or in favorable cases, rule out the disease entirely.
Symptoms of diabetes
- Increased thirst
- Frequent urination, especially at night
- Fatigue
- Weight loss without changes in eating habits
- Increased hunger
- Blurred vision
- Slow or difficult wound healing
- Frequent skin infections and fungal skin conditions
- Itching and inflammation around the genital area
As shown above, many symptoms of diabetes are general and may not immediately raise suspicion. As a result, patients often seek medical attention only years later. Nevertheless, proper diagnosis and treatment are extremely important, because persistently high blood sugar levels damage vital organs such as the heart, blood vessels, nerves, eyes, and kidneys.
Complications develop slowly but continuously. By the time symptoms become noticeable, reversing the damage is often difficult or impossible. Untreated diabetes can lead to disability, blindness, or heart attack.
Hidden diabetes
Hidden diabetes refers to cases where symptoms such as increased thirst, frequent urination, slow wound healing, or unexplained weight loss are already present, but the diagnosis has not yet been confirmed. Most patients seek specialist care at this stage. Hidden diabetes is not considered a separate disease, but rather an undiagnosed condition requiring further evaluation. If several of the above symptoms apply to you, we recommend consulting your general practitioner or booking an appointment at our diabetology clinic.
Diabetes treatment
The foundation of diabetes treatment is a healthy lifestyle. As mentioned above, prediabetic conditions (IFG, IGT) may often improve with an appropriate diet, regular physical activity, weight normalization, and healthy sleep habits.
In type 1 diabetes, treatment requires insulin replacement therapy because the body does not produce enough insulin. Following the specialist-prescribed diet is also essential for effective therapy.
In type 2 diabetes, medication-based treatment is usually the primary approach, and determining the appropriate therapy is also the responsibility of the specialist. However, healthy lifestyle changes remain the cornerstone of treatment, as they naturally help reduce blood sugar levels, while medication serves as supportive therapy.
