What Factors Are Associated With Poor Sleep Hygiene?
- Weight gain: Too little sleep can lead to weight gain—even in individuals with otherwise low risk of obesity.
- Diabetes: Non-restorative sleep disrupts carbohydrate metabolism and raises blood glucose levels, increasing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Losing as little as two hours of sleep per day can increase insulin resistance and reduce glucose tolerance. Insufficient sleep also makes weight loss more difficult. Elevated blood sugar linked to diabetes may raise cholesterol, blood pressure, and triglyceride levels, ultimately damaging nerves and blood vessels.
- Inflammation: Reduced sleep duration is associated first with subclinical, then with clinically noticeable inflammation. These often asymptomatic inflammatory processes increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.
- Stroke: Research suggests a correlation between stroke risk and both short and long sleep duration (nine hours or more).

Sleep Diagnostic Procedure
- Comprehensive medical history: Assessment of sleep habits, lifestyle, and potential sleep-related symptoms using a structured questionnaire.
- Sleep diary: Patients often keep a sleep diary, which helps the physician make a more accurate diagnosis.
- Sleep monitoring: Overnight monitoring using specialized diagnostic devices to assess sleep patterns and disturbances.
- Laboratory tests: In certain cases—such as suspected sleep apnea—additional laboratory examinations may be required.
- Follow-up care: Ongoing evaluation and management to monitor progress and adjust treatment if necessary.

What Happens to the Cardiovascular System in Sleep Apnea?
In sleep apnea, due to structural airway issues or central nervous system dysregulation, the upper airway can obstruct hundreds of times per night, preventing oxygen from reaching the lungs. The chest and abdomen make significant effort to breathe, but each episode requires a brief, unconscious micro-arousal to allow airflow, typically accompanied by loud snoring. This places considerable stress on the body.
During each cycle, blood pressure may fluctuate by 100–150 mmHg without the patient being aware. Heart rate also shows dangerous swings—slowing, then accelerating. When these events occur hundreds of times throughout the night, the cumulative cardiovascular impact becomes significant.
Sleep apnea increases the risk of stroke and myocardial infarction eight-fold. Due to alternating bradycardia and tachycardia, pacemaker implantation may also become necessary.
